  15. The Verdict Is a Question

  17. <p>    The decision left many Swedes more dissatisfied than ever
  18. with the bungled investigation of the February 1986 murder of
  19. Prime Minister Olof Palme. Last week a panel of judges found
  20. Carl Gustaf Christer Pettersson, 42, a former mental patient
  21. with a long criminal record, guilty of the slaying and sentenced
  22. him to life in prison. The court split 6 to 2, with six lay
  23. judges convinced that Pettersson gunned down Palme. But the two
  24. professional judges on the panel voted for acquittal.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>    Throughout the five-week trial, Pettersson, who had
  27. previously been convicted of more than 60 offenses, including
  28. the 1970 bayonet slaying of a man near the Palme murder scene,
  29. maintained his innocence. The key witness against him was
  30. Palme's widow Lisbet, who told the court she was absolutely
  31. certain that Pettersson was the man she saw when she turned
  32. around after her husband fell. An appeals court will decide in
  33. September if there was sufficient evidence to convict
  34. Pettersson.
